Haemorrhoid Rubber
Band Ligation

It is performed at the clinic without general anaesthesia, with recovery within 24–48 hours.

What is haemorrhoid rubber band ligation?

Rubber band ligation is the most widely used non-surgical technique for treating grade I, II and III internal haemorrhoids.

Es un procedimiento ambulatorio, sin anestesia general, que can be performed at the clinic in a few minutes. The usual recovery is 24-48 horas.

Haemorrhoid banding: placement of elastic band at the base of the haemorrhoidal bundle

First-line treatment: rubber band ligation is the first-line treatment for grade II and III haemorrhoids with prolapse. More than 90% de los pacientes of patients referred for surgery can be resolved with this procedure at the clinic.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed at the clinic, with no need for general anaesthesia or hospital admission. It takes approximately 5–10 minutes.

1

Diagnostic anoscopy — identification of the haemorrhoidal bundle to be treated and its grade

2

Insertion of the ligator — the ligation device is introduced through the anoscope

3

Band placement — the elastic band is placed at the base of the haemorrhoidal bundle, without touching the sensitive skin

4

Natural shedding — within 5–10 days the haemorrhoid reduces its blood supply and falls away naturally

Results and efficacy

The recurrence rate can be minimised with lifestyle changes: a fibre-rich diet, adequate hydration, and avoiding constipation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the banding procedure painful?
When does the banded haemorrhoid fall away?
Can I return to work the same day?
Patients can usually return to work within 24–48 hours. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for the first few days.
How many sessions are needed?
Habitualmente son suficientes 1-2 sessions. En casos con varios paquetes hemorroidales puede ser necesaria una session adicional, con un intervalo de 4-6 weeks between sessions to allow adequate healing.
